2 Problems Every Driver Should Look For In Their Car

Many times the only the requirement for getting a drivers license is passing a test that shows that you know how to operate a car, but you don't have to prove that you know how to take care of a car. However, it is important to know what things to look for in your car to make sure it is safe to drive. Here are some signs that your car needs maintenance.

1. The Car Is Making A Grinding Noise

One of the most alarming signs from your car will be the sounds that it makes. If your car is working properly you really shouldn't be hearing any noises come from it. Instead, the car should essentially be silent while it is driving with the exception of a gentle hum or purr. The problem comes when you start to hear grinding while driving or stopping. For example, does the car grind when you press on the brakes? If so, this could be a major problem with your brakes. If it grinds while you are switching gears, it could be an issue with the transmission. And if it is grinding while you drive it could be an issue with the engine. As a general rule if you notice any grinding while operating the car you should get it looked at right away. A problem with your brakes, transmission, or engine could all render the car unfit to drive.

2. Leaking Fluids

Another problem you should be watching for is fluid leaking from the car. Your car should be dry while you are driving it and while it is parked. If the car leaves a puddle in the garage, or leaves a trail on the driveway while you are pulling out, this is a problem. Before you panic, look at the color of the fluid. A red fluid is probably most alarming since this is transmission fluid. Once the transmission starts to leak it will only be a matter of time until it gives out. If the fluid is black oil it is engine oil, and if it is blue it is coolant. If any of the fluid is running low in the car it can be dangerous to drive. Thus, top off the fluids, until you can get it to a mechanic to have it looked at.
