How You Can Change The Brake Light Switch On Your Chrysler 300 In 20 Minutes Or Less

The brake light switch is located at the top of the brake pedal shaft. When you press down on the pedal, the spring-loaded stem on the switch stretches out to open the brake light circuit. This action activates your brakes lights. This is turn lets those behind you know you are slowing down so they don't run into the back of your car. If the brake light switch fails, you could easily be involved in a rear-end collision. Replacing the brake light switch is not that difficult and an amateur mechanic will be able to do it on about ten minutes. If the brake light switch malfunctions on your Chrysler 300 car, here is how you can replace it.

You Will Need:

  • New Brake Switch
  • Trim Tool
  • Small Flat Head Screwdriver

Remove Carpeting

You need to remove the carpeting from around the bottom of the dashboard to access the brake light switch. Start by removing the carpeting from above the emergency brake pedal. There is a little plastic clip that holds the carpeting up near the bottom of the dashboard. Use a trim tool to get behind the carpeting and pop the clip out. A trim tool has a forked end that will slip around the stem on the clip so you can grab it. Lift up on the clip to pull it out.

Pull the carpet down from under the dashboard until you get near the center console. There will be another clip near the console. Remove this clip and fold the carpeting back to expose the area at the top of the shaft of brake pedal under the dashboard.

Remove Brake Light Switch

Locate the brake light switch by following shaft of the brake pedal up under the dashboard. The switch is the little white box near the end of the shaft.

Grab the back of the switch and turn it counterclockwise until you hear it click. You can now pull the switch straight out of the bracket. Use a small flat head screwdriver to lift up on the tabs of the switch to detach it from the electrical connector.

Install New Switch

Make sure you have bought a new brake light switch specifically made for your car. Take the switch and plug it into the electrical connector. Put the switch up into the opening on the bracket and turn it clockwise until it clicks into place. Fold the carpeting back over and clip it into place. Turn on the car and have someone watch your brakes lights as you press down on the brake pedal to make sure they come on.
